Description:
Large, uniformly colored typical thrush, with longer wings and tail than Common Blackbird. Male is black with yellow bill and lacks yellow orbital ring. Female is uniform dark brown, lacking paler throat. Juvenile has rufous-buff underparts with diffuse dark brown barring and spotting.
Distribution:
Common resident in the western parts of Gilgit-Baltistan, in Ghizer, Hunza, Nagar, Gilgit and Diamer. Highly adapted to subalpine rocky grassy slopes with dwarf juniper and alpine meadows usually around 3900m; winters lower but not below 3000m.
Behavior:
Forages on ground, hopping agilely over rocks and boulders; favors soft bare ground at edges of melting snow. In late summer, forages in small parties of up to ten individuals. Diet mainly earthworms, molluscs, insects including caterpillars, small lizards, fruits, berries and seeds.
